Wishes in Flight: Ellis Hope

We're gearing up for our annual 'Wishes in Flight' campaign to help Make-A-Wish South Dakota.

You can donate your unused air miles to help send South Dakota kids on the trip of their dreams; kids who have battled some pretty serious medical conditions.

On Monday night we met up with 17-year-old Ellis Hope and heard his story of beating lymphoma.

These pictures of summertime fun don't come close to telling the story of how Ellis Hope ended up in them. "So I had been coughing for like two months." A persistent cough that wouldn't go away. So Ellis went to the doctor, figuring it was just a cold.
His doctor suggested an x-ray and it found something. "She's like....so there was a mass...we don't know what it is." Then came the words that would change Ellis' life forever. "But it's most likely cancer." Specifically lymphoma in his lymph nodes and on his kidney.

"We thought it was going to be something related to a cold." Ellis' mom Lori is a religious person. She's a pastor at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls and says this diagnosis knocked her down and hurt her heart.
She says she got a lot of her strength from Ellis himself; specifically something he told her soon after his illness was revealed. "We're not going to sit here and cry and act like it's the end of the world."

Ellis underwent six months of chemotherapy and during it he was contacted by Make-A-Wish.
Ellis told them if he could go anywhere it would be to the Bahamas with his mom and two brothers.
And it happened. They went last summer. "Honestly it was life changing for us. It really just gave us this huge like..we're through this...and it was like our victory."

And for mom Lori the trip was a realization that there can be life after cancer. "All of a sudden the trip was like....there's a future. We almost forgot that because you're so busy getting through the next thing."

Ellis says his doctors have told him he is cured; that his lymphoma is gone.

Remember your unused air miles can go a long way in making wishes come true.
